Notice the mismatched ribbon spools on the Corona, a fun little quirk on a dearly beloved machine. |
It was love at first sight. Seeing it perched on my desk still feels weird, I've wanted a Corona 4 for so long now! |

Not many of my typewriters have names but one for the Corona 4 just came to me: Frieta which is mispronunciation of Friede which is German for joy because this typewriter has already brought me great joy and Aggie began a trend of using feminine names.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your great new typewriter! When I finally got a Corona 4 I was impressed with its solidity and general high quality; they improved a lot compared to the 3.
ReplyDeleteRubbing a platen with Soft Scrub sometimes helps to get rid of the hard, slick outermost layer and provide grip. You can follow up with a thin layer of brake fluid if you want to soften up the rubber more.
Thanks for the advice, it's worth a shot because at the very least it will be as bad as it already is. I'll have to remember that next time I go out shopping.
DeleteI really like the Corona 4. A lot.
Oooh! Exciting!
ReplyDeleteI'm awaiting the return of my own recovered Corona 4 platen at the moment, so I understand your joy and share your anticipation. (:
Let me guess your favorite Royal: the late-40's QDL? (simply because it's my favorite)
Ooh, you are close, but that is not my favorite machine. I'll have to introduce it next post. I have never used a late 40s QDL but I'll have to keep an eye out now. I have experience on the ones right before and right after however...
DeleteMade in March 1927, I just learned how to decode the serial numbers on old Coronas.
ReplyDeleteout of all the corona 4 colors, ive always admired this blue the most.
ReplyDeletei dont have a corona 3 or 4 myself but ive flirted with the idea on half a dozen occasions. its a nice looking machine, alright - cant go wrong with it.
congrats!
